(Required) ETFO – The Importance of Professional Boundaries and Communication

November 3, 2020 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm UTC-4

All Year 1 Teacher Candidates are expected to attend this event (or one of the simultaneous Affiliate events) per Ontario College of Teachers’ (OCT) accreditation requirements.

Experience in the Professional Relations and Services Department at ETFO has confirmed that many instances of teachers facing allegations of physical or sexual misconduct or investigations by the employer are often the result of alleged allegations related to professional boundaries. This workshop focuses on maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and implementing best practice to minimize the risk of a teacher facing allegations or disciplinary action. Video clips, day to day school scenarios and relevant legislation including the role of the College of Teachers and members Duty to Report are incorporated into this workshop to encourage all participants to consistently use best practices and maintain exemplary professionalism at all times.

We are excited to welcome presenter, Phyllis Hession-White, Executive Assistant, Professional Relations Services Area.

We will learn about the obligations that teachers have around the Duty to Report. We will learn what Professional Boundaries are and why it is important to maintain Professional Boundaries. We will learn ways to minimize the risk of being faced with allegations or disciplinary actions related to professional boundaries. We will learn best practices about exemplary professionalism in the field of education.

By the end of the session:

  • I know about the obligations that teachers have around the Duty to Report.
  • I know what Professional Boundaries are and why it is important to maintain Professional Boundaries.
  • I know ways to minimize the risk of being faced with allegations or disciplinary actions related to professional boundaries.
  • I know best practices about exemplary professionalism in the field of education.
